Early mornin’ grooves

Some early morning grooves, albeit shaky and slightly ‘rusty’, with some potential.

Peppermint Groove in the UK – goodbye and thank you.

This week sees the final lessons and students for Peppermint Groove in the UK as Matt and his family move back to South Africa after a six-year stint in the UK. Most students have chosen to continue their lessons with Rodgell Shadrache from Drumrhythm. It has been a fantastic year and three quarters of watching many non-drummers/beginners embark on the wonderful journey of learning how to take command of that mysterious thing called rhythm.

Watching each student advance and grow in their drumming skills has been an absolute pleasure for Matt and has given him even more incentive to continue Peppermint Groove in South Africa and expand into facilitating larger djembe drumming groups as well.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all past and present students for their dedication and drive, commitment and positive attitudes and wish all the very best in their learning of the drum and its powerful rhythms!

Edited Senegal video

This is the video I use in my workshops to show kids my time in Senegal in February 2009. It has a lot of footage left out due to time constraints. I hope it shows a bit of my time there and the incredible experience. Not being allowed to film Mamady Keita teaching or performing, there is not much in the footage of Mamady himself unfortunately! Enjoy it though, a little bit of beautiful Africa!

A basic swing 6/8 rhythm. Starts with H/H playing 123456. Bass is on 1. Snare is on 4. Then play bass on 1, 3 and 6.
